India’s iShippo, founded by serial entrepreneur Karma Bhutia, provides an online marketplace for handmade products. It aims to connect craftspeople from relatively remote parts of India who would not otherwise have access to a broad market for their wares. We spoke to Bhutia about the premium that handmade products command over machine-made products, and what would happen when robots become smarter than humans.

It not only promotes handcrafted ‘Make in India’ products but also includes promotion of this cultural heritage and that of its keepers i.e. traditional handloom artists and craftsmen. This startup is an online eCommerce marketplace, where people around the world connect to make, sell and buy handcrafted goods.
This is India's ETSY – an online handcrafted marketplace called iShippo; it’s been promoted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as part of the “Make In India” initiative. “We’re like Etsy but different because we are integrated more vertically; we provide a lot of value added services for the artisans,” says iShippo’s Bangalore-based founder and CEO Karma Bhutia, discussing how the platform works with traditional groups of artisans across India.
